Strengthening San Diego's Native Biodiversity

We kicked off March getting our hands dirty and planting 500 coastal prickly pear cactus at El Monte - and we ended March the same way! We are so appreciative of the dozens of volunteers who joined us throughout the month to assist with this ongoing project. These cactus pads will provide essential habitat for the imperiled Coastal Cactus Wren and countless other native species, helping to strengthen San Diego's native ecosystems and biodiversity! Conservation happens one plant (or 500) at a time.

Lions, and Tigers, and...Giraffes - oh my!

We had a roaring good time at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park with some familiar faces from East County San Diego. With dozens of friends in tow, we made our way through the park, spotting lions, and tigers, and...giraffes - oh my! For many attendees, this was their first time experiencing the Safari Park and our hope is these opportunities create lasting memories for them, and enhance their passion for protecting our planet!

We are able to offer events like this as part of our Education Through Recreation program. This program is funded by the Outdoor Equity Grants Program, created through AB 209 and administered by California State Parks, Office of Grants and Local Services.

San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering

For the second year in a row, we participated in Generation STEAM's San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering at Petco Park! This is the largest event we've participated in and requires a lot of manpower to make it possible. We are so grateful for the board members and EDI staff who helped pull this off, and hearing from an attendee and their family that we were their favorite booth in the entire park definitely reminds us why it is so important to take part in these events and help spread the word about our programming!

Mt. Helix Nature Day

We also attended Mt. Helix Nature Day where we were surrounded by nature-inspired vendors, hands-on activities for families, crafts, a native plant sale, delicious food trucks, and - our favorite part of these events - like-minded community members who love our natural spaces as much as we do! We had a wonderful time soaking in the sun and cool breeze with everyone and look forward to participating again next year.

(Another!) Collaboration with Tree San Diego

We were thrilled to spend another great day at El Monte with our friends from Tree San Diego! Their fantastic Climate Action Fellows helped us plant 367 coastal sage scrub plants at El Monte, providing critical habitat for a range of species and promoting biodiversity in San Diego.

EDI Scholarship Awards

We are accepting applications for EDI's 2025-2026 scholarship awards! AND we've extended the deadline to April 7th, 2025! For the fourth year in a row, we are thrilled to be awarding two $1,000 scholarships to two deserving San Diego county residents pursuing degrees in natural resources for the upcoming school year. Please share with your networks and spread the word! Deadline to apply is April 1st, 2025.
