February 2025 Newsletter

Reaching New Heights

Earlier in February, we had 49 enthusiastic participants join us at Grotto Climbing & Yoga in Miramar to test their strength and reach new heights with friends and family! With students from both Johnson Elementary and Anza Elementary, we had familiar faces ready to scale these walls (with help, of course!) and they did a great job. The positive feedback we receive from these experiences are what keeps us going, and we are thrilled to be able to deliver core memories to these wonderful communities.

We are able to offer events like this as part of our Education Through Recreation program. This program is funded by the Outdoor Equity Grants Program, created through AB 209 and administered by California State Parks, Office of Grants and Local Services.

Spectrum News Featuring EDI

Veronica, our amazing Conservation Technician, was featured in a Spectrum News article about the imperiled Monarch Butterfly, titled, “Iconic monarch butterfly to be listed as a threatened species in U.S. We are proud of how much she has accomplished since joining the EDI family last year, and can't wait to watch her excel with round 2 of our Monarch Butterfly Habitat Gardens project. You can read the article by clicking here.

Progress Continues at El Monte

We hosted multiple volunteer events at El Monte this month where fantastic volunteers joined us to plant native sage scrub species and cacti. We planted over 200 plants and countless cacti pads! We are so grateful for every volunteer hero who helps EDI achieve our mission & vision!

Collaborating with Tree San Diego

We also collaborated with Tree San Diego and their Climate Action Fellows on additional maintenance at El Monte! Together we pulled dove weed that was overcrowding the cacti and it made a HUGE impact. We love collaborating with wonderful organizations like Tree San Diego, working together to multiply our impact on our local wild spaces.

In Memory of Jeff Saar

Our amazing Tuesday Volunteers gathered to install a plaque at the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge in honor of Jeff Saar, a cherished friend, community member, and beloved volunteer who passed away last year. The plaque serves to honor his unwavering commitment and invaluable contributions to EDI and the refuge. He left a lasting impact and we miss him immensely on our crew each week!

EDI Scholarship Awards

We are accepting applications for EDI's 2025-2026 scholarship awards! For the fourth year in a row, we are thrilled to be awarding two $1,000 scholarships to two deserving San Diego county residents pursuing degrees in natural resources for the upcoming school year. Please share with your networks and spread the word! Deadline to apply is April 1st, 2025.
